What I’ve been up to this month

This month I have been finishing off the first part of my 1point4 miles project. You can see the website here and video here. The work here is very minimalistic black and white. It is very different from the States of Mind work that you can see on my portfolio page and Instagram feed. 

The reason I went down this route was because I wanted to produce something that came to life a little more quickly than my average image that I make that is full of textures. It was refreshing to make images that came together into a project relatively quickly.

My big learnings from this have been:

-       No project is ever really finished (I’m sketching for future episode of this project)

-       There’s a lot to be said for multiple outputs: so far, I have created prints, a website and a video. I also plan to create a handmade book and possibly a zine. Each output requires a different way of looking at the project. I have learned a lot from it

What are my plans for next month?

It’s been a while since I have created any handmade books. I have a couple that I really want to put together. One is for the 1point4 miles project. Another is for my Deconstructed project. I made one for this before, but it didn’t have the impact I wanted. So I want to try again with a slightly simpler book. 

What I’ve been writing about this month

My November blog is all about launching my photographic manifesto. I explain what a photographic manifesto is, why photographers benefit from having on and how to get started with your own. I also share the nine points of my own photographic manifesto. I’m still developing this and I’ll be writing more about it in the coming months.

What books have caught my attention this month?

I have recently been introduced to the work of Guy Dickinson. He creates wonderful books of deep, multi-layered, largely abstract images. They are usually paired with some intriguing poetry as well. You can find out more about Guy here.

What I have been listening to this month?

It has been great to see some live music again! The Little Unsaid played a wonderfully varied and energetic gig at our local arts centre in Corsham. Their albums are well worth listening to and you can find out more here.
