Photography isn’t just about technique
It’s about how you look
What you notice
What holds your attention
What you return to again and again
Many photographers reach a point where they feel something is missing
They can make competent images. But they want their work to feel more personal. More intentional. More theirs.
A Deeper Way of Seeing is designed to help you move from making photographs to developing your own photographic voice.
This is not a technical manual
It won’t teach you camera settings. It won’t give you rules to follow.
Instead, it offers a structured creative journey to help you:
- Improve your way of seeing
- Make images with greater intention
- Develop ideas into meaningful projects
- Combine photographs and words
- Recognise patterns in your own work
- Build a personal creative practice
What’s Inside
Part I – Deepening Your Way of Seeing
Five reflective guides to reshape how you approach photography:
- Developing the art of seeing: the most important skill a photographer can have – What’s the difference between looking and seeing?
- Small detail photography: the next stage in the journey of seeing – Don’t you love it when you are completely drawn in by an image?
- Intentional Image Making: the importance of photography with purpose – “What shall I make a photo of today?”
- Take your vision to the next level: working with projects – How do you get going on a first project?
- Images and words: a powerful combination – Just one word can help you see an image in a completely different way
These chapters challenge traditional image-making and give you a new way to build your own creative practice.
Part II – 60 Thoughtful Photography Prompts
Organised into themed sections, these prompts help you explore each of the five guides in detail. These aren’t technical exercises. They’re invitations to explore how you see and why you make images. It’s a chance to dive deeper into creating images which are a step apart from traditional photography. It comes with a full guide on how to get the best from these prompts.
Part III – Developing Your Own Practice
- My simple system for creating personal prompts - Matt’s one-word photo prompt system and even more ideas
- How to review and refine your own images – Why do some images stay with you?
This is how your photography becomes a practice rather than a hobby.
Who This Is For
This guide is for you if:
- You feel stuck creatively
- You want your images to feel more personal
- You enjoy thoughtful photography rather than quick results
- You’re curious about developing long-term projects

Why I Created This
For years, I made images that were technically fine and felt almost nothing. And then I realised that photography isn't just about technique. It's about how you look.
I had the camera, the gear, the settings figured out. But I was making images of places rather than expressing how it felt to be there. The camera was actually getting in the way of seeing properly. That learning changed everything about how I work.
I'm a landscape photographer, but not a traditional one. My images are often blurred, muted, and quietly abstract. They wouldn't win a camera club competition, and I'm fine with that because they say something a perfectly sharp image never could.
Alongside my own photography, I spend a lot of time teaching. I've worked as a trainer for many years and trained specifically in brain-friendly learning, and what I keep finding, in workshops, in mentoring, in conversations with other photographers, is that most people don't lack skill. They lack clarity about what they actually want their images to say.
That's what this book is for.
It’s not a list of rules to follow. It’s just a structured way to slow down, pay attention, and start making images that feel like yours.
If you’re ready to deepen your creative practice, A Deeper Way of Seeing is a structured place to begin.
