How to create more satisfaction from your photography through project based work

Are you ready to develop more meaning in your photography?

Do you want to move beyond the single image?

Explore your subjects with more depth?

Stop worrying about what you will do for your next photography session?

Photography projects offer the chance to become much more involved with your subject. You build up a body of work that says far more than a single image could ever do. And you start working more intentionally and developing your photographic voice in new ways. It is an incredibly satisfying way to work.

Introducing: The Practical Photo Project

The Practical Photo Project is a live online 5-month/6 call course. You learn a proven template of how to create a successful photography project and develop your own project at the same time. You work in a small, supportive group (maximum 8 people) and you receive live teaching and personal feedback.

Here’s what we learn on The Practical Photo Project

Session 1 – What makes a good project?

Choosing a theme – setting boundaries – the importance of play and evolution

Session 2 – Beginnings

Evolving first ideas – 9 ideas for what your project might look like

Session 3 – Shaping

How outputs shape images and vice-versa – identifying gaps – creating an output template

Session 4 – Sequencing

Why we need a sequence – rhythm and flow – space – how to make sequencing less daunting – how to create analogue and digital sequences

Session 5 – Proofing and making

The importance of proofing – image consistency (and when to ignore it) – preparing for output

Session 6 – The final project presentation

Letting go – next steps – a chance to present and celebrate our work

Each session consists of a live two-hour online call. I share an example project and a presentation packed full of practical advice on how to take the next steps in your project. Working in a small, supportive group, you present your work and receive detailed constructive feedback. Finally, you receive detailed guidance on what to do next.

I’m Matt Parker

I have been working in projects for many years now and have successfully published four books of my projects. My prints and cards are widely available. I have worked as a professional trainer and mentor for many years and I have studied brain friendly learning.

Matt is a brilliant, inspiring and patient teacher. Matt clearly knows his subject and really loves to share it with others. I came away with a lot of ideas and renewed energy. The range of work we created as a group was lovely to see. Thanks Matt – I will definitely be back for more.

This course is not for everyone!

It’s not for you if you:

  • want to spend your time talking about camera gear
  • prefer technical excellence rather than vision
  • have rigid ideas about your photography and don’t want to change them

But if you want to learn new ideas on how to create a meaningful body of work that expresses how you feel about your subject, then this could be just what you need!

I learned a lot in a short time and didn't realise how quickly it went. I'm already using what I learnt and it has become second nature.

Frequently asked questions

When does the course take place?

Each call is at 6.30pm UK time on the following Wednesdays in 2026: 4th Feb, 4th March, 1st April, 29th April, 27th May, 24th June.

What happens if can’t make one of the course dates?

No problem! Simply submit your work before hand and I’ll review it on the call. You receive a video recording of the call so you do not miss any of the training or feedback.

Do I need to have a project in mind?

No. The first session will help help you choose a theme if you are struggling. And we'll help you shape a theme into a project if you already have some ideas.

Do I need to be a brilliant photographer to benefit from this course?

Absolutely not! This training is aimed at any level of photographer.

What equipment do I need?

You can enjoy this course whether you have a smartphone or the latest high specification camera. The only thing you need is to have the Zoom call software installed on your computer, phone or tablet. This is free and easy to install.

It is user friendly, practical and comprehensive and not just a whole load of technical theory.

More Testimonials

I gained a much better understanding of photography and I really enjoyed the idea of storytelling.  I haven’t ever really engaged with photographs in this way before – seeing them more as just snaps – so literally my eyes have been opened! You are very good teacher and dealt with all my questions very patiently!

Valerie J

I really liked your themes and exercises on the photo locations. It gave me a starting point but also helped seeing my environment with different eyes hunting around for some good shots. I learned a lot in a short time and didn't realise how quickly it went. I'm already using what I learnt and it has become second nature.

The relaxed atmosphere really helped in not feeling like a photography newbie and knowing that anyone can take great photos without having to know all the ins and outs of photography. It's a great introduction to taking proper photos with your smart phone.

Thank you, Matt, for an enjoyable and interesting day.

It was well planned out and in a small group, it was easy to learn.  You were very open to questions and adapting to the skill and interests of everyone on the course.

"I loved this workshop. Matt is a brilliant, inspiring and patient teacher. I’m one of those who gets frustrated that struggled to take the pictures I can see in my mind. Matt talked us through some key tools and approaches to help and when putting these into practice, he provided guidance, pointers and encouragement. Over the course of just one morning, I was able to see definite improvements in how I take photographs which made me very happy. The afternoon was my first attempt at editing photographs and it was so much fun! Matt explained the various options to give us some confidence and then encouraged us to play, offering opinions when useful. The range of pictures we created as a group was lovely to see. Matt answered lots of questions from us all and clearly knows his subject and really loves to share it with others. I came away with a lot of ideas and renewed energy around taking photographs and knowing how to practise the tools to create some really interesting images – lots of playtime ahead! Thanks Matt – I will definitely be back for more."

I was lucky enough to attend a workshop with Matt and learned so much. Matt is an excellent tutor and presented the information in a clear and accessible way. He encouraged us to use our mobile phone cameras to take pictures that went deeper than the usual quick snaps. I took a photo that I really love which I had printed and have hung on the wall at home. I highly recommend this training if you want to explore better mobile phone photography.

For someone whose main ideas of photos previously had been a recorder of family events, the course was an eye opener.

The main attraction, however, is Matt's experience and ability to put this across. Matt has an excellent portfolio to illustrate his ideas and is a clear communicator in getting this across.

Very highly recommended.

Matt’s photography training simplified the photography process. He inspired me to be much more creative, seeing photographic possibilities in a whole range of subjects. I’d really recommend one of his workshops.
